Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) stated that House Democrats won't help Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) without getting something in return to prevent his removal by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
McGovern, ranking member of the Rules Committee, mentioned on “The Julie Mason Show” on SiriusXM that if Speaker Johnson seeks help to stay as Greene moves her resolution forward, he needs to understand that Democrats won't be easily persuaded.
He also emphasized the need for something that Democrats can justify to their constituents in exchange for supporting Johnson as Speaker.
Greene has been escalating her threat to oust Johnson, but some Democrats have said they would be willing to step in and save him depending on how he handled Ukraine aid, which was ultimately included in a foreign aid package that easily passed with bipartisan support this past weekend.
Greene expressed her belief that Johnson’s Speakership is ending, and insisted that he resign to facilitate a controlled process, stating that he would be forced out if he doesn't comply.
Despite gaining support from two fellow GOP House lawmakers, Greene's resolution has not yet gained further conservative backing, as these lawmakers have been disappointed with Johnson's bipartisan deal-making on major legislation for months.
