Three decades after The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, became a big success at the box office and major award shows, the director of the movie has announced that a sequel is currently being developed.
Stephan Elliott, the director of the Australian queer classic, has stated that a sequel is certainly in the works told Deadline , and the original stars Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce, and Hugo Weaving are back “on board.”The trio once again play three drag performers who journey through the Australian outback in a large old bus to entertain at a casino managed by one character’s estranged wife. The bus is called Priscilla.
The oversized headpieces, adorned gowns, and the windswept desert play almost as significant a role as the performers while the three entertain with ABBA and disco songs throughout the film.
While two of the characters are drag queens, the third is a transgender woman, and the positive portrayal she receives in the movie is one of its standout aspects.
Previously, he mentioned that sequels had been suggested numerous times, but none of the potential storylines intrigued him or seemed fitting for the larger-than-life characters.
“I just wasn’t sure, I just didn’t want to repeat myself,” he stated. “I thought, what am I going to do? Stick them on a cruise ship, stick them on a train? You name it, over the years, I’ve been pitched
“I’m not repeating myself,” he added. “We’ll start the new film in Australia, but by God, we’re going on one helluva journey.” Priscilla 2 in spades.”
“The original cast is on board, I’ve got a script that everybody likes, we’re still working out deals. … It’s happening.”
“Ultimately, everybody has been brought to the table and we’re currently finalizing the deal to ensure everyone is satisfied,” Elliott remarked.
While the sequel will necessarily introduce new characters, it will still feature “old disco classics, but we’ll be moving into contemporary as well.”
The movie was adapted into a Broadway musical and other derivative live shows, and he observed that Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is particularly well-received by the audience when it’s included.
“We’ve got to move with the times,” he emphasized.
Three decades later, the original cast and director will make a comeback to the big screen.
