Triston Casas is now added to the increasing group of important Red Sox players who can't play because they are hurt.
On Sunday morning, the Red Sox said they have moved the skillful first baseman to the 10-day injured list because of a left rib strain. Tyler Heineman, a catcher, has been brought up from Triple-A to take his place on the major league roster.
On Saturday, Casas had to leave the game after one at bat because he felt uncomfortable in his left rib area. After the game, the Red Sox manager Alex Cora showed worry for Casas, saying that he is not doing well when asked. Casas had left the stadium by the end of the game and was still having tests when reporters talked to the team in the clubhouse.
Already dealing with many injuries in their lineup, the Red Sox can't afford to lose Casas. The 24-year-old has had a very good start to his second full season as a starter and is currently batting .244 with six home runs, 10 RBI and an .857 OPS.
The Red Sox are missing other key players due to injury including shortstop Trevor Story (fractured shoulder, out for the season), second baseman Vaughn Grissom (left hamstring strain, has yet to debut), outfielder Tyler O’Neill (concussion, 7-day IL) and Rafael Devers, who has not been placed on the IL but has missed nine of Boston’s first 22 games because of shoulder and knee issues.
The Red Sox are almost out of healthy players on the 40-man roster as Heineman was the only one available in Triple-A.
