The news that he and his family would be kicked out of their royal residence left Prince Harry ‘absolutely furious and in tears’, it was claimed this weekend.
As described in his memoir Spare, King Charles requested that his youngest son Harry give up the keys to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Estate, the use of which had been a wedding guest from the Queen.
This week it was revealed that the Prince is now officially a US resident – and reportedly gave the start date of this as the exact day he left.
Another indication of how personally he took the decision to deny him use of the cottage comes from author and royal expert Tom Quinn, who said he saw it as a ‘cruel rejection’.
He told the MirrorTom Quinn said that ‘Harry was absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore – he felt his father had no right to do it and that it was purely vindictive.
‘Whenever Charles puts his foot down, it seems unfair to Harry who feels that after everything that has happened to him, he should always get whatever he wants whether that be security paid for by the British taxpayer or a luxurious UK home.’
The decision came as a ‘painful reminder of all that he felt when his father fought with his mother during their long drawn out, painful divorce’, he claimed.
Harry and Meghan officially moved out of four-bedroom Frogmore Cottage in July last year, having confirmed in March they had been asked to leave.
It is where they brought home their first child, Archie, in 2019, and returned for Lilibet’s first birthday.
‘We loved that place,’ Harry said of Frogmore Cottage in his memoir. ‘From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there.
‘We couldn’t wait to wake up in the morning, go for a long walk in the gardens, check in with the swans. Especially grumpy Steve. We met the Queen’s gardeners, got to know their names and the names of all the flowers.’
The blow came after Harry lost access to security arrangements provided by police after he gave up his role as a working royal.
This has proved a bitter and drawn-out disagreement, as the prince says he is no longer safe visiting the UK without it given his high profile and his previous role as a soldier.
Tom Quinn, who made the comments, has written multiple books on British royals including ‘Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle’.
