Celtics backup center Luke Kornet won't play in Sunday’s Game 1 against the Heat due to a new calf injury.
Kornet injured the calf during a recent team practice, and it's uncertain when he will return. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla stated that the team will assess his progress on a weekly basis.
“I’m not sure. Just in one of the drills, (he) came up a little tight, and I think you just have to kind of reevaluate in a couple days,” Mazzulla said before Sunday’s game. “So he’s done some non-contact stuff, so we’ll kind of see where he is every couple days, week to week.”
Kornet played in 63 regular-season games, averaging 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in over 15 minutes per game. He had a career-best 70% field goal percentage, and he started seven games, often filling in for Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford when they were injured.
The Heat ruled out star Jimmy Butler and veteran guard Terry Rozier before the game. Sharpshooting forward Duncan Robinson is able to play.
