The show Gardeners’ World on BBC2 welcomed a well-known rock star this week.
Fans watching Monty Don and the gang on Friday were shocked when they saw the bassist of U2, Adam Clayton – a part of the famous band with Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr – giving Adam Frost a tour of his beautiful garden.
Clayton, who is Irish, has lived just outside Dublin since he was five years old, and he loves gardening in his natural surroundings.
He bought his home in the 1980s after U2 became famous with The Joshua Tree, and the property is surrounded by 17 acres of land near his boarding school from his teenage years.
Even though he only had a little knowledge about gardening, he knew he found peace outside, and he transformed an overgrown piece of land into his own perfect place.
In the last 30 years, he planted over 4,000 trees, and his garden is full of rhododendrons, camellias and magnolia trees.
He said: ‘It takes my mind away from myself. I start to see the colors, see the form and I just enter a different world.’
Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost was surprised by the ‘magical’ garden, and he described the restored river as the ‘heartbeat’ of the operation.
Viewers were also impressed and full of compliments for the With Or Without You rocker’s burst of color and life.
‘We were spoiled this evening with Arundel Castle’s tulips, Jim’s wonderfully colorful garden and then Adam Clayton’s magnificent sanctuary. #GardenersWorld,’ tweeted @TheEricaJames.
@Ellebelles1 added: ‘Lovely piece on @gardenersworld1 about Adam Clayton’s garden in Dublin. He has created a true paradise garden 🙌🏼’
‘Caught a glimpse of Gardeners World during halftime and the inimitable Adam Clayton,’ wrote @Dudsey. ‘A stunning garden and the explanation of the release it gives him from the rigors of an incredibly mental and hectic lifestyle prove the power of nature and the great outdoors.’
Some people couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a pun, and we can’t blame them.
Fan @IbelieveinCoyot quipped: ‘Genuinely fascinating feature on Adam Clayton’s garden which is beautiful! Shame they didn’t talk about trees as I wanted to know if he can’t live with or without ewe.’
Even people who don’t particularly enjoy his music were amazed, as @VeganTrailRunr admitted: ‘I don’t like the music of U2 but Adam Clayton’s garden is absolutely stunning.’
Gardeners’ World airs Fridays at 8pm on BBC Two.
