Stephen A. Smith expressed disapproval of the hush money trial against ex-President Trump, saying he wishes to see him lose in a just manner.
As a mainly Democratic voter, the sports commentator expressed being thoroughly appalled by Trump's criminal trial starting with jury selection on Monday. He views it as an attempt by Democrats to politicize the courts due to their inability to halt the former president's progress in the polls.
“That seems to be their strategy, but I'm telling you, it's not effective. Not effective at all,” Smith told Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Thursday. “And honestly, I'm okay with it not being effective because I may not support Donald Trump, but I want him to lose fairly.”
“I want him to lose because you have better ideas and you present your case to the American people better than he does. That’s why I want him to lose,” he continued, referring to President Biden. “I don’t want him to lose the way they’re trying to make him lose.”

Including this case and others, the former president faces 88 criminal charges across four indictments. It's uncertain if any of his other cases will go to trial before the November election, where he is expected to be the GOP nominee. Smith argued that Democrats who pushed for Trump’s trial to commence before the election, which it did on Monday despite his efforts to postpone, are just revealing their fear that Biden may not defeat Trump in the polls. According to a survey from mid-March, Trump currently leads Biden by .08 percent in national polling. A survey from mid-March found that 44 percent of respondents said they would not change their vote even if Trump is convicted in the hush money trial.
