BEDFORD — Alyx Rossi, a junior, played a key role in securing another win for the Bedford High softball team on Friday afternoon, excelling both as a pitcher and as a batter.
She not only pitched a one-hitter but also achieved a perfect performance at the plate, driving in both runs in a 2-0 nonleague triumph over Triton.
“(Rossi) is consistently energetic,” stated Buccaneers coach Dennis Walsh. “She consistently gives her all during practice. We sometimes have to ask her to dial it down. … She always wants to be active.”
Rossi struck out eight of the first 10 batters before conceding a bunt single just over her glove, marking the first hit she has allowed this season.
Afterwards, she gathered two more strikeouts, tallying a total of 10 through four innings. She retired the final 11 batters, seven of which were via strikeout, and concluded the day with 18 strikeouts.
She also initiated the offense with an RBI double in the opening inning, bringing Addi Poulter, who had reached on an error, home to establish a 1-0 lead.
“It's definitely beneficial to have my team cheering me on and ensuring that even if I strike out, I still maintain positive energy and have the support of my teammates,” Rossi commented on her performance at the plate.
In the fourth inning, she hit a 2-0 pitch over the center field wall, increasing Bedford's lead to 2-0 (4-0).
“(Rossi) just loves to hit hard,” Walsh commented about the junior. “She's eager to step up to the plate. … She's extremely powerful. She's fantastic.”
For Triton (2-2), junior Emma Penniman struck out 12 and allowed just one earned run while also playing the entire game.
