Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, gave $2 million to the campaign shortly after being selected as vice presidential candidate in March.
Shanahan was officially revealed as Kennedy’s VP on March 26 at an event in Oakland. The next day, she contributed a $2 million donation to the independent campaign, as stated in Federal Election Commission (FEC) documents filed by the Kennedy campaign on Thursday. Puck initially reported about her donation.
Under federal law, candidates can invest unrestricted funds into their own campaign and are not bound by the $6,600 individual donation limit.
The Silicon Valley lawyer has previously supported Kennedy’s bid financially, directly donating to his campaign committee, as per FEC filings, and contributing $4 million to support the Super PAC authorized by American Values 2024, a group supporting Kennedy’s White House bid.
According to FEC filings, Kennedy’s campaign collected $5.4 million in March, with Shanahan's $2 million included.
The campaign spent approximately $4.5 million last month and had $1.6 million in debt, which were payments owed to Gavin de Becker, Kennedy’s security consultant, according to the filings.
As indicated in FEC records, the campaign had $6 million in cash at the beginning of April.
Shanahan has not yet appeared alongside Kennedy at a campaign event, but they are scheduled to participate in a virtual event on April 22. On Thursday, the Kennedy campaign confirmed qualification to be on the ballot in the crucial state of Michigan, bringing the total number of states to nine.
