One of the Red Sox's remarkable success stories in the minor leagues is moving to the major leagues. Left-hander Cam Booser is said to be joining the team for the weekend series in Pittsburgh.
MLB.com's Ian Browne was the first to report the move. Left-hander Joe Jacques is said to be returning to the Worcester Red Sox after being called up for a day and pitching 1.2 innings in Thursday's loss to Cleveland. Another move to free up space on the 40-man roster is also expected.
Booser, who is 31 years old, has never pitched in the majors and has followed an incredibly unlikely path to get to this point. A Tacoma, Washington native, Booser endured numerous major injuries during high school and college and was suspended for 50 games in 2015 after testing positive for marijuana. He retired in 2017 and spent two and a half years outside of baseball working as a carpenter before making a comeback in 2020. After playing for various semi-pro and independent teams, he signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in early 2023.
His first season with the Red Sox wasn’t particularly impressive — he had a 4.99 ERA over 57.2 innings in Worcester — but this spring he's been outstanding. In his first four appearances, he has struck out 15 batters in just 6.2 innings, pitching a 2.70 ERA and only walking once.
Now, after more than a decade, he will have the opportunity to achieve his long-held dream of playing in the big leagues.
