Chelsea star Ian Maatsen has informed the club of his desire to join Borussia Dortmund on a long-term basis this summer, as per reports.
The left-back moved to Dortmund on loan in January and the German team is eager to keep him at the Westfalenstadion.
Maatsen scored his first-ever Champions League goal this week as Dortmund made it to the semi-finals with Chelsea fans urging the club not to sell him.
Speaking after the match, Maatsen said he was intent on becoming a regular at Chelsea before his loan move to Bundesliga giants Dortmund.
However, Maatsen’s stance has now changed, and he now wants to permanently join Dortmund, feeling ‘very comfortable’ at his loan club.
This is according to recent reports in Germany, which has stated that Maatsen has a €35-40m release clause.
Maatsen spent last season on loan at Burnley, aiding Vincent Kompany’s side in securing a league title as he was chosen for the Championship Team of the Season.
Chelsea had wanted to sell Maatsen last summer and had even accepted a £31.5m offer from Burnley before he rejected a permanent transfer to Turf Moor.
The west Londoners were once again willing to sell in January but Maatsen ended up moving to Dortmund on loan.
Maatsen, who has made 17 appearances for Dortmund thus far, seems poised to move on at the end of the season if an agreement is reached with Chelsea.
‘I always believed [I could] play for Chelsea but unfortunately for some reason it didn’t work out how it should’ve,’ Maatsen told CBS Sports this week.
‘Now I’m here I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I can say I’m very proud of myself.
‘I kept believing in myself and came here to experience playing my game at the highest level, playing my game. Today I think I showed a very good performance. I’m very happy.’
