The Democratic Party of Florida announced on Tuesday that it collected $1.3 million in the initial three months of 2024, as indicated in a statement first revealed by The Hill.
The party in the state stated that it obtained 5,271 donations in the first quarter, before the recent Florida Supreme Court decisions on abortion. It mentioned that the decisions led to a significant increase in funds.
The most recent fundraising amount surpasses any achieved last year.
Phillip Jerez, the executive director of the state party, commented, “During the last six months, the Florida Democratic Party has achieved consecutive million-dollar quarters,” “With two successive fundraising successes of $1.1 million in Q4 2023 and $1.3 million in Q1 2024, we are going into the presidential election cycle with a solid base to expand our campaign to regain control of Florida.”
The recent fundraising figures are a positive development for the state party, which has faced challenges in competing with the increasingly dominant Republicans in the state.
Florida, previously a significant swing state, was in the spotlight during the last week of the presidential election after the Florida Supreme Court rulings on abortion.
One of the rulings upheld the state’s 15-week abortion ban and allowed a ban after six weeks of pregnancy to take effect next month. The other ruling approved a ballot measure that would safeguard access to abortion in the state if approved in November.
In response to the events in Florida, President Biden’s reelection campaign issued a memo last week indicating it will focus on flipping the state in November. Additionally, Senate candidate and former Rep. Debbie Murcarsel-Powell (D-Fla.) described the decisions as “a gamechanger” in the Senate race.
