Trevor Story has experienced some awful injury setbacks since joining Boston, and on Friday night it seemed he experienced another.
On Friday, Story, who plays shortstop for the Red Sox, had to stop playing because he hurt his shoulder trying to dive for a hard-hit ball to his right. He was fully stretched out when he dove and stopped the ball, but landed hard on his left shoulder and immediately began twisting in pain. The trainer quickly helped him, and he came out with his arm hanging by his side.
The Red Sox soon announced that Story was dealing with “left shoulder pain.”
Losing Story would be a huge setback to a Red Sox team that has exceeded expectations through the first week of the season. Story’s defense has been a big improvement from last season, and earlier Friday he made an amazing running throw on a close play at first base.
At the time of his injury, Story had no hits in 2 at-bats that day and had a .226 average for the season. Pablo Reyes was substituted into the game to take his place.
