Former leader of the Move Forward party, Pita Limjaroenrat, said goodbye to parliament last night. He mentioned that this may be his final political debate before the party is dissolved by the Constitutional Court.
In his closing speech at the end of the two-day general debate against the government, Pita, who currently serves as the advisory chairman to the Move Forward party leader, talked about the party’s win in the May 14 general election and its exclusion from the formation of the government.
He assessed the poor performance of the Pheu Thai-led administration over the past seven months, highlighting its failure to implement promised reforms and the lack of leadership, vision, and national agenda.
Pita expressed no regrets about his party's election victory and the 312 votes it secured in parliament, despite ending up in the opposition, which he considers an important role in a democratic system.
Pita stated that he has no regrets about the potential end of his political career and believes that Thailand can still progress towards change, even if the Move Forward party is dissolved.
Reflecting on the responses of ministers to criticisms during the debate, Pita regretted missed opportunities for the country and the support his party provided to the government.
Instead of the government’s “Ignite Thailand” slogan, Pita proposed the slogan “Darkness of Thailand” to highlight the government’s failures in various areas like constitutional amendments, bureaucratic reform, economic stimulation, and justice process reform.
Regarding economic growth, Pita agreed with Prime Minister Srettha’s statement about Thailand’s GDP growth for the fourth quarter but noted that it places Thailand sixth in the region.
Pita mentioned that while tourism in Thailand is thriving, it is concentrated in just eight out of 77 provinces due to the lack of attractions in the rest of the country.
He stated that it's time for a cabinet reshuffle to ensure the right people are in the right positions, as the past seven months have been a total failure for the government.
