Luis Nani has lavished praise on Alejandro Garnacho, saying of the young Manchester United player: ‘He is similar to me.’
Garnacho has long been predicted to become a star and this season he has proven himself as one of the first choices on Erik ten Hag’s teamsheet.
While fellow forwards Antony and Marcus Rashford have struggled with their form, the 19-year-old has scored nine and assisted four in all competitions so far.
He most recently scored twice in the 4-3 loss at Chelsea on Thursday night and will be hoping to have a significant impact on Sunday when United host arch-rivals Liverpool.
Garnacho has previously mentioned that his football idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, but another former United and Portugal winger believes the teenager is more alike to him in style.
Nani won four Premier League titles and the Champions League during a seven-year period at Old Trafford, scoring 41 goals and making 71 assists during that time.
He told The Mirror: ‘When I watch Garnacho, he reminds me of myself. He even has the No.17 shirt – the same number I wore. When he changed to that number this season, he started scoring some goals, so that’s been good for him.
‘He’s not afraid of taking defenders on, making the runs, making assists. He’s a very good player, he has so much time to improve his game and get stronger. He will be fantastic in the future.
‘His game is more similar to mine when I was at United than Cristiano’s. He’s a very exciting player and I hope in the future he can win titles with the club and help it to be successful again.’
Despite Garnacho’s best efforts, United have had a challenging season and currently they are nine points off fifth place and what will likely be the final Champions League qualification spot.
‘We’re not used to being in this position in the table. We were always a team used to competing for first position,’ Nani added.
‘The last few years the team hasn’t been able to do that, but we know it’s a process and you have to readjust the team, the club.’
