After human remains were found wrapped in plastic at a nature reserve in Manchester, a murder investigation has begun.
Someone found the remains in the woods at the Kersal Wetlands in Salford, and then told the police when they found something 'unknown' wrapped in plastic.
According to GMP, a pathologist and detectives went to the scene and confirmed that it was indeed human remains.
Because it was ‘not possible the victim could have survived’, a murder inquiry has been started. The victim has not been identified yet.
An evidence tent has been set up around the crime scene, and the area has been closed to the public while forensic officers do their investigation.
The nature reserve is located between Littleton Road in the Salford area and off Bury New Road in the Prestwich area.
The remains, which have not been identified, were found at about 5.50pm on Thursday in a secluded woodland area where the police have set up a big crime scene, according to the force.
It has been confirmed that it “would not be possible for the victim to have survived”, so the police started a murder investigation.
Nobody has been arrested.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: ‘I want to make sure the local community that even though this is a disturbing find, we have a large visible presence in the area to finish our inquiries, provide reassurance and listen to any concerns.
‘I would encourage anyone who may have important information to talk to these officers.
‘A large scene has been set up, and will probably remain for a while, while we work to unravel exactly what happened. The area is closed to the public.
‘The victim has not been identified yet, but we know that behind this discovery there will be a family who have lost a loved one, and we want to make sure they are supported as quickly as possible.
Anyone who thinks they may have seen something suspicious in the Kersal Dale area in the last few days could be very important in finding out what happened.
I would ask that anyone who has any information that may be important to our inquiries, no matter how big or small, comes forward.’
