Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) criticized New York City Mayor Eric Adams's (D) offer to stay at a migrant shelter in New York during his visit to the Big Apple, calling it a 'gimmick' in an interview on Thursday.
During an interview on Fox News's 'Hannity' on Thursday, Abbott stated that the invitation is merely a gimmick.
Abbott also suggested that the mayor of New York should take responsibility for the deaths occurring under his watch and ensure that dangerous criminals are kept behind bars.
Abbott was likely referring to an NYPD officer, Jonathan Diller, who was recently killed at a traffic stop by a man who allegedly had been arrested reportedly 21 times, nine for felonies. The suspect had been released from prison in September 2021 after serving nearly five years.
Earlier on Thursday, Adams announced the city has continued to see a dramatic decline in crime, consistent with the year-over-year trend in most other large cities in the country.
Adams, at a press conference on Thursday, was asked about Abbott's scheduled trip to New York, where he spoke later on Thursday at a Republican fundraiser.
During a press conference on Thursday, Adams mentioned that he would offer Abbott a stay in one of the HERRCs to show him how migrants are being treated with dignity and respect.
Adams also questioned the purpose of Abbott's visit, stating that he will witness crisis management in action.
The feud between the two public figures has escalated as they both grapple with a surge in migration, with Abbott sending buses of migrants to New York, prompting criticism from Adams and others for doing so without notice.
