Former Governor Larry Hogan (R) is just ahead of Democrats Angela Alsobrooks and Rep. David Trone in the Maryland Senate race, as per a recent poll.
A poll from Goucher College was made public on Tuesday. Hogan has 44 percent of voter support, leading Alsobrooks by 4 points in a potential head-to-head match-up.
11 percent of respondents were undecided.
In a hypothetical match-up between Hogan and Trone, Hogan barely wins with 43 percent to Trone's 42 percent. 10 percent were undecided.
The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The poll was co-sponsored and funded by The Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College and The Baltimore Banner.
In a race between the two Democratic candidates, Trone leads Alsobrooks 42 percent to 33 percent among Democratic likely voters. Around 25 percent are undecided.
According to Mileah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center, if former Gov. Larry Hogan wins the Republican primary, the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin would be closely contested against either Democratic candidates—U.S. Rep. David Trone or Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
“Abortion, gun control, and health care, as well as Democratic control of the U.S. Senate, all matter for Democrats, but public safety, economic development, and tax issues rise to the top as the key issues for voters overall.”
Hogan’s entry into the race has disrupted the plans of Democrats who expected the Maryland Senate seat to remain Democratic; the Republican former governor’s entry will require Democrats to spend money in the Old Line State.
The Goucher College Poll was conducted from March 19 to 24. A total of 800 adult registered voters participated, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The poll includes 408 Democratic likely voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
