PA residents who want to participate in the April 23 primary election must register to vote or update their registration within a week.
If you are not registered by April 8, you will not be able to vote. Residents need to be a U.S. citizen, living in their current precinct for at least 30 days before the election, and at least 18 years old by Election Day to register.
If you are unsure of your status, you can check the Department of State's website to see if you’re registered.
If you need to register or update your registration, you can do so online, by mail, or in person at your county election office. Due to the approaching registration deadline, registering by mail may be unwise. Visit this website to register online.
In Pennsylvania, voters must be registered with the corresponding party to vote. Voters not registered with one of the two major parties will only be able to vote on non-partisan questions.
The following map displays the current breakdown of party registration in all 67 Pennsylvania counties.
As of April 1, Pennsylvania has 8.7 million registered voters, accounting for 87% of the eligible population. Democrats make up 44.71% of voters, while Republicans make up 40.11%, with Democrats leading by 4.61%.
Democratic dominance in voter registration has been decreasing steadily over the last 30 years, causing Pennsylvania to become more politically balanced. This is the first time in decades that Republicans have exceeded 40% of the statewide voter rolls.
The following map shows the current voter registration by county and the percentage of the voting age population that is registered to vote in each county. Chester and Bucks counties lead the state with over 92% of their voting age population currently registered to vote.
Note that around 30% of the population in Forest County consists of inmates at a state prison. Imprisoned felons are not allowed to vote in Pennsylvania.
