Ruben Amorim is bothered by the rumors that his replacement at Sporting is already being lined up
The Portuguese manager has emerged as the top choice for replacement Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, due to his impressive performance at Sporting.
The 39-year-old’s team are leading the Primeira Liga by one point and are in a strong position to win the league title for a second time under his leadership.
After Xabi Alonso announced his plan to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season. Amorim has become the favorite to replace the departing Klopp, but he is not commenting on the speculation.
Bayern Munich and Portugal assistant manager Anthony Barry has been suggested as Amorim’s replacement at Sporting, which is the only thing bothering him about the rumors of his own departure.
‘The only thing that annoys me is that they already had a replacement for me,’ he said. ‘That’s what got me the most upset, even today I told [Hugo] Viana [director of football] to calm down because it’s not like that.’
Amorim also declined comparisons with Jose Mourinho, not wanting to encourage that kind of talk.
‘It doesn’t make sense and I have no illusions about it,’ he said. ‘There’s no comparison between the great Jose Mourinho and the Sporting manager.’
Amorim is now the favorite with bookmakers to be Liverpool’s next permanent manager, ahead of other candidates like Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann, and current assistant Pep Lijnders.
Speculation will persist about who will replace Klopp, but things are going very well for the German in his final season at Anfield.
Results were ideal for the Reds over the weekend as they defeated De Zerbi’s Brighton 2-1 and saw Manchester City draw 0-0 with Arsenal, putting Liverpool two points ahead at the top of the Premier League table with nine games remaining.
