People have expressed their admiration for a very good football player and a wonderful young man after his death.
Ross Aikenhead, who was in his early 20s, was just starting his career and was considered a young talent in Cheshire.
His team Winsford United FC put out a statement on X on Sunday, confirming the sad news.
It said: ‘We announce with deep sadness that our player, Ross Aikenhead has passed away.
‘Ross was a wonderful young man and very good football player. He will be greatly missed by everyone associated with the football club.
‘Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Ross’s family and friends. RIP Ross.’
His former club Wythenshawe Town, where the young athlete had played in the early part of the season, also shared their condolences.
A statement on Facebook said: ‘We confirm former Ammie Ross Aikenhead has sadly passed away.
‘Ross was a skilled attacker with a good eye for goal, and a wonderful guy off the field. He will be missed by everyone at the club.
‘Our thoughts and prayers are with Ross’ family at this time.’
They said that a minute’s applause would be held before their game on Easter Monday in his memory.
Other teams that he had played against paid tribute on social media, admitting that he had caused ‘chaos’ to their defence in the past.
All added that Ross will be missed both ‘on and off the football pitch’.
The reason for his death has not been disclosed.
