Newcastle manager Eddie Howe asserted that star forward Alexander Isak is not available for purchase this summer after being associated with a transfer to Arsenal.
Isak was the standout player in his team’s thrilling 4-3 victory over West Ham, scoring twice from the penalty spot and assisting Harvey Barnes’ first of two late goals.
Despite a season affected by injury, the 24-year-old has still managed to score 14 goals in the Premier League this season and has attracted interest from several major clubs, especially league rivals Arsenal.
Newcastle had difficulty bringing in new players in January due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, but Howe was quick to dismiss any speculation that the Swedish forward could be sold in the summer to raise funds for their summer recruitment.
‘He’s an exceptional talent and no one associated with Newcastle would want to lose him,’ Howe stated.
‘I thought he was superb against West Ham. He didn’t score from open play but his two penalties were superb and his overall performance was very good. His link-up play and athleticism made him appear in a very good condition.’
While the Magpies may not be open to parting with Isak, who recently stated that he was unconcerned by the increasing transfer speculation, there will be interest in several other key players.
Bruno Guimaraes, who has a £100million release clause, has attracted interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City, while Joelinton and Callum Wilson both have contracts that expire at the end of next season.
However, Howe is currently focused on securing European football for a second consecutive season. Following their victory over West Ham on Saturday, his team is now just one point behind the Hammers with a game in hand.
‘There was always that sense that the season was still alive but you need to win games, and the more you don’t win, the quicker the season slips away,’ the Englishman added.
‘I always say the team's character is reflected in the players, and you could see the character shining through against West Ham because, without that, we would have been in a very difficult position.
‘We wouldn’t have made a comeback in the manner that we did. The spirit is still there and that’s the most important thing above all else. If you have spirit, you have a chance.’
