Abortion rights will be up for voting in Florida this year after the state Supreme Court said on Monday that a suggested ballot measure can progress.
The court supported Floridians Protecting Freedom, a group supporting abortion rights, and dealt a significant blow to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and GOP Attorney General Ashley Moody, who were against it, before the April 1 deadline.
Supporters had collected more than enough signatures for the ballot while waiting for the Supreme Court review.
If the initiative is accepted, it would undo the current 15-week ban in the state to the point of viability, around 24 weeks, when the fetus can live outside the womb.
The initiative needs to achieve a 60 percent approval. Citizen-led ballot initiatives face a tough road to get on the ballot, as the GOP-majority Legislature has toughened requirements over the years.
