House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner (R-Ohio) stated on Sunday that he expects strong backing from Congress for additional funding for Ukraine, despite disagreements among lawmakers causing uncertainty around the aid.
During an interview with CBS News’s “Face The Nation,” Turner mentioned that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has expressed his support for Ukraine and suggested that it would be a priority when Congress returns from its holiday recess.
Turner highlighted that Speaker Johnson has made it clear that supporting Ukraine will be a top priority for Congress after addressing other funding bills, expressing confidence in overwhelming congressional support for the aid.
During an interview with CBS News, Turner was questioned about the level of support for the bill within the GOP, and whether additional measures such as a loan payment plan or border security provisions would be necessary.
In response, he indicated that there is already significant support from Republicans and the general public for the bill.
Questions still exist. There are still uncertainties about how Johnson will manage. the delicate issue of aid to Ukraine, as he previously declined to consider a Senate-passed foreign aid package due to its lack of border security measures and suggested providing aid to Ukraine in the form of a loan. Turner believes that discussions in both chambers will cover border security provisions and the structure of nonmilitary humanitarian aid, ultimately leading to a negotiated package. Turner said he expects discussions about including border security provisions and structuring nonmilitary humanitarian aid, and anticipates reaching a negotiated agreement by the end of the process.
There might be discussions in both chambers regarding border security measures and the structure of nonmilitary humanitarian aid, with the expectation of a negotiated agreement at the end of the process.
Turner hopes that this will occur before Congress's next week-long break later this month.
