Ukraine will be forced to start a slow withdrawal without American military assistance, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
In an interview with The Washington Post, the Ukrainian leader talked about the military struggles facing the army as they run low on ammunition.
He said: ‘If there is no US support, it means that we have no air defence, no Patriot missiles, no jammers for electronic warfare, no 155mm artillery rounds.
‘It means we will go back, retreat, step by step, in small steps. We are trying to find some way not to retreat.’
The fight for further aid from the US has lagged for months due to the House of Representatives citing ‘domestic priorities’ rather than international ones.
President Joe Biden has continued to fight for further aid packages as Ukraine faces a renewed struggle on the frontline this summer.
But Ukraine could see some assistance come from – of all places – frozen Russian assets in the European Union.
Earlier this month, the EU found a legal way to use Russia’s frozen assets, worth more than £179 billion, to fund further ammunition.
By taking the interest earned on the frozen assets, more than 97% of the interest could be given to Ukraine, with 3% used to fund ongoing litigation with Russia as they attempt to get their money back.
Ukraine has been given more than £7.1 billion in military assistance from the UK since the beginning of the war and given weaponry to help troops.
The European Union has given £4.7 billion in funding to help Ukraine in their battle against Russia.
Despite the assistance, the battle is becoming more tense between Russia and Ukraine, and the latter is running out of ammunition.
Previous reports revealed Ukraine is so low on ammunition that it could run out of air defence missiles by the end of the month.
