A recent study discovered that most people in the US are part of a specific religious group, mostly a Christian one, although this is becoming less common.
As per the research, done by Gallup, roughly 75% of Americans claim to be part of a specific religion.
Of those who are part of a religion, around 68% are part of a Christian religion, with 33% being Protestant, 22% Catholic, and 13% belonging to another Christian religion, the survey revealed.
Only 7% of the respondents who are affiliated with a religion do not follow Christian beliefs. According to Gallup, 2% are Jewish, 1% are Muslim, 1% are Buddhist, and some follow other religions.
22% of respondents stated that they do not have a religious preference.
The study noted a decrease in the number of people identifying with a Christian religion over time, while the number of those with no religious preference has slightly increased.
In 1973, 87% of adults identified with a Christian religion and 5% did not have a religious preference.
The significance of religion in American lives has also decreased. In 1965, Gallup found that 70% of respondents said religion was very important in their life. Today, 45% say the same.
Church attendance and membership have also decreased. Only 3 out of 10 religious US adults go to a religious service weekly.
The survey was carried out from May 1-24, 2023, and Dec. 1-20, 2023, with a random sample of 2,024 adults. It has a margin of error of three percentage points.
