A female para-military ranger was killed by gunfire while selling food at a local market in the Chanae district of Narathiwat, the southernmost province of Thailand, on Thursday evening.
The district police stated that a single armed individual seemed to have followed the 30-year-old ranger, Nurisan Phromsri, as she was making extra money during her off-duty hours at the Dusongyor market.
The attacker took out a 9mm handgun and shot the ranger in the head before fleeing, causing panic among the shoppers and vendors who ran in different directions.
Authorities believe the motive behind the killing may have been a personal conflict or the involvement of insurgents, similar to the recent fatal shooting of her younger brother, allegedly by insurgents.
Law enforcement officials have expressed their intention to interview the victim’s family members and other individuals who witnessed the incident.
