Jordan Henderson is expected to miss the Ajax’s upcoming three matches after being absent from both of England's friendly games during the international break because of injury.
The former Liverpool midfielder was selected by Gareth Southgate but did not play in either friendly against Brazil or Belgium at Wembley.
The type of injury was not specified, but it was not believed to be serious as Henderson was given a chance of playing against Belgium by Southgate before the Brazil match.
However, Ajax manager Johannes van’t Schip has confirmed that he has suffered a setback and will miss the next three games.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the Ajax manager said: ‘Jordan Henderson is out as he received a set back. He remains in England for another week too to recover and will miss the next three games.’
The next three Ajax games see them go to PEC Zwolle on Sunday, then take on Go Ahead Eagles and Feyenoord next week.
The injury prognosis means Henderson could return against Twente on 14 April in the Eredivisie.
The injury does not help Henderson’s chances ahead of England’s Euro 2024 campaign this summer after Kobbie Mainoo took advantage of his absence against Belgium.
The Manchester United teenager played in midfield and won the Man of the Match award in his first start for the Three Lions.
As long as Henderson returns to full fitness before the summer tournament then he will almost certainly be in the squad, but he is not competing with the 18-year-old for a place in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.
Mainoo will be in action this weekend as the Red Devils travel to Brentford on Saturday before going to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next Thursday.
