In the third quarter, Alexa McCabe of Wissahickon girls lacrosse had limited time and chose to go for a direct shot.
McCabe explained that she saw her teammate Sam (Farno), noticed the time was running out, and decided to make a quick move to score, realizing there was no time for extra passes.
McCabe made a sprint towards the net and scored with just 9.5 seconds left in the third quarter, giving Wissahickon a two-goal advantage over Methacton going into the fourth quarter.
McCabe stated that speed is crucial to her playing style and mentioned her confidence in dodging hits from opponents, which also affects their performance.
She added that evading hits gives her confidence and puts pressure on the opponents when she scores.
In the final quarter, Wissahickon maintained their offensive momentum and scored the first five goals to secure a 14-8 victory over the Warriors.
Lila Marciniak noted the team's positive attitude and increased effort in the fourth quarter, leading to a successful outcome.
McCabe and Farno both scored four goals, Marciniak scored three, and Nora Ryan contributed two to Wissahickon's victory.
Marciniak highlighted the team's strong teamwork and improved performance in the fourth quarter.
Despite missing the District 1-3A playoffs last season, Wissahickon's freshman class has significantly boosted the team's performance in 2024, with an average of 16.5 goals per game.
McCabe emphasized the strong bond within the team, mentioning the positive impact of long-term familiarity among players.
Giada Catoia scored four goals for Methacton, while Bella Catania scored twice.
Methacton briefly led at 1-0 in the first quarter before Wissahickon scored the next three goals.
Methacton closed the gap to one goal three times, with Catoia and Lily DeWan scoring in the third quarter to bring the score to 8-7.
McCabe's late goal put Wissahickon ahead 9-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and Marciniak's goal increased the lead to three with 7:26 left in regulation.
"I don't really believe that if I think, I'll get scared," said Marciniak about taking 8-meter chances. "But I just go."
Marciniak scored a goal at 6:13 and just 16 seconds later, Ryan scored a goal to make it 12-7 Trojans.
"I think we just calmed it down," McCabe said. "We were very rushed in the beginning."
Farno increased the scoring run to 6-0 with goals with 1:39 left and then again at 48.3 seconds.
Methacton will host North Penn at 3:45 p.m. on Friday and then start PAC play at home against Perkiomen Valley at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Wissahickon will visit Marple Newtown at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
McCabe's goal on an 8-meter shot with 36.7 seconds left in the first quarter had the Trojans leading 4-2 before Catoia scored at 14.1 seconds.
Wissahickon extended their advantage to 6-3 in the second quarter with two goals in a span of 45 seconds – Ryan scoring at 6:54 before Marciniak scored at 6:09.
"I definitely have a lot of confidence because like Lex said we've known each other since we were very little," Marciniak said. "And we've just been kind of bonded – we all just fit in very well together."
McCabe's second goal of the half had Wissahickon again up three at 7-4 before Methacton reduced the margin to 7-5 at halftime after Catania connected on a shot at 2:05.
