The Red Sox cut two more players late Thursday after their 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, sending infielder David Hamilton and infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez to Triple-A.
Hamilton and Gonzalez were in the final group competing for a spot on the Red Sox bench. Hamilton, one of the quickest players in the organization, is very fast on the base paths and has stolen 137 bases in the minors over the past two seasons, but he struggled in his limited MLB chances last year.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez is a 27-year-old versatile player with three years of experience in the major leagues, all with the Chicago White Sox. Gonzalez played in 44 MLB games last season and had a .194 batting average with a .585 OPS, but can also play every position on the field except first base and catcher.
He was considered one of the main contenders for the Red Sox utility role, which now seems likely to go to Pablo Reyes.
After Thursday’s cuts, the Red Sox now have 40 players in big league camp, including seven non-roster invitees. These players are left-handers Joely Rodriguez and Lucas Luetge, catchers Roberto Perez and Mark Kolozsvary, first baseman C.J. Cron, outfielder Mark Contreras and infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez.
