Gwyneth Paltrow has expressed her opinion about the extensive promotion of superhero movies, stating that some of her older films wouldn't be made today.
The 51-year-old participated in the latest episode of Hot Ones, released on Thursday, and discussed her extensive career while eating very spicy wings.
During the section, she was asked about American Fiction’s director Cord Jefferson’s speech at the recent Oscars, where he urged Hollywood executives to focus more on smaller-budget films instead of huge $200million blockbusters.
As he received the award for best adapted screenplay for the acclaimed movie, he told the star-studded crowd: ‘I understand that this is a risk-averse industry, I get it. ‘But $200million movies are also a risk. And it doesn’t always work out, but you take the risk anyway.
‘Instead of making one $200million movie, try making 20 $10million movies. Or 50 $4million movies.’
Gwyneth, who famously appeared as Pepper Potts in a series of Marvel movies, agreed with Cord’s comments and highlighted the large number of superhero movies released in recent years.
Speaking to Hot Ones host Sean Evans, she stated: ‘I absolutely understand where he’s coming from. It makes sense. You want to have the best chance of having a strong ROI [return on investment]. People put a lot of money into these things and they want them to be profitable.
‘But I think, if I look at the industry as a whole, this big push into superhero movies. I mean, you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original.
‘And yet they’re still always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality, or specificity, or real point of view.
‘I grew up doing those movies and I sometimes regret the fact, I look back at some of the movies I made in the 90s and think, “That just wouldn’t get made now”.
‘I do think that you do get more diversity of art when there’s less at stake, and people can express their true voice, and make a film the way they want to make it.
‘I think those are generally the more resonant ones.’
Gwyneth previously gained attention for her comments about the Marvel Cinematic Universe – after she completely forgot that she appeared in one of the movies.
While she debuted as Pepper in the Iron Man movies alongside Robert Downey Jr, who played Tony Stark, it turns out she forgot about reprising the role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
As you do.
Appearing on Jon Favreau’s Netflix show The Chef Show, he talked about the two filming together, leaving his friend puzzled.
‘We were in Spider-Man together,’ he said before noticing her confused expression. ‘Remember we were in Spider-Man?’
‘We weren’t in Spider-Man,’ she continued, before Jon insisted: ‘Yes, we were You were in Spider-Man.’
Having absolutely none of it, Gwyneth vowed: ‘I was in Avengers.’
‘No, you were also in Spider-Man… Remember? You were in Spider-Man at the end, Tom Holland is there and you're going to walk out and do a press conference – and I give you the ring? That was Spider-Man.’
Realizing that she has been in a lot more Marvel films than she realized, she added: ‘That was Spider-Man?! Oh my God!’
Can you imagine just casually forgetting that you’ve acted in one of the biggest superhero films ever?
Only Gwyneth Paltrow…
