A person who spent time alone and became friends with a couple before secretly giving them poison in an attempt to take over their business has been sentenced to life in prison.
Luke D’Wit, who is 34 years old, met Carol and Stephen Baxter, who were 64 and 61, while creating a website for their company that sells shower mats on Mersea Island, Essex.
Carol had a rare autoimmune disease, which D’Wit used to convince her to take his 'potions'.
The 34-year-old made more than 20 fake online profiles, including one of a US doctor and members of a pretend support group for the disease, to contact Carol and make her believe that the treatments were real.
Eventually, he left them a mixture of hot water, aspirin, lemon juice, and fentanyl – a very strong painkiller that can be deadly in small amounts – for them to drink in their armchairs in April last year.
D’Wit set up a security camera to watch the couple from his phone.
He 'observed them dying on his phone' and went back into the house to clean their cups and remove any evidence of his mixture before leaving.
The couple's daughter found them dead two days later.
Being part of their close community on the island, D’Wit was reported to have very few social connections outside of his friendship with the couple, and still shared a bedroom with his mother.
