Approximately 500,000 Starbucks mugs have been called back because people got burns or cuts from them.
The recall is for four ceramic mugs with metallic coating made by Nestlé USA and sold in the 2023 Starbucks Holiday gift sets.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Today, the recall was announced, indicating that officials believe the product poses a significant risk to consumers.
The agency stated that it knew of 12 cases where the mug overheated or broke, causing 10 injuries, including nine severe burns and blisters on fingers or hands.
One person got a cut on their finger and another injury needed medical attention.
‘If microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, the mugs can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards,’ the CPSC added.
‘Consumers should immediately stop using the following recalled mugs and return them to the point of purchase or contact Nestlé USA for a full refund.’
The recall affects nearly 440,500 products.
The shimmery mugs were sold in 11-ounce and 16-ounce sizes ‘as part of one of the following gift sets sold during the 2023 holiday season: Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug’.
The CPSC said the gift sets were sold online and in-store at Target and Walmart from November to January.
They were manufactured in China, according to consumer safety officials.
Nestlé USA said ‘the company took immediate corrective action’ when customers first alerted them to the issue and the company is working ‘closely’ with CPSC officers.
‘This recall does not involve any other Nestlé USA or Starbucks-branded products,’ it added.
