Austin Hooper easily explains why Patriots players should enjoy working with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
Hooper was with Van Pelt in Cleveland for the 2020 and 2021 seasons and can confirm that Van Pelt is consistent, likable, smart, and enjoyable. And that's pretty much all you need to know.
On Thursday, Hooper told reporters via video conference that there is positive energy in the building, which is a big part of it. He mentioned that work is much better when you like the people you work with, not just during the three hours on Sunday, but throughout the week when you spend a lot of time together.
Hooper, 29, is getting ready to play for his fifth team in New England this season and believes Van Pelt stands out among other coordinators.
Hooper mentioned that Van Pelt's style, approach, understanding of his team, and his qualities as a man and coach will make it very enjoyable to be in the building every day.
Last week, the Patriots signed the experienced tight end to a 1-year contract. Hooper is expected to be their No. 2 at the position, behind Hunter Henry. He noted that he is familiar with Henry, as they were both drafted in 2016.
He initially joined the league with the Falcons and spent four years there, including a couple Pro Bowl seasons. Hooper then moved to Cleveland for a significant free-agent deal, where he met Van Pelt and started playing in-line instead of split out wide, requiring him to adjust his game to a more physical style.
As for his expectations in New England, Hooper, on his fourth team in as many years, chose not to discuss anything specific about Van Pelt's offense. However, he suggested that Van Pelt will be open to adapting to the team's personnel, drawing on his experience coaching different offenses with various players.
Hooper described Van Pelt as someone who has played a lot, been through a lot, coached a lot, and understands the game from every angle.
Earlier this offseason, Van Pelt stated that he would incorporate most of the Browns offense, as he was their offensive coordinator from 2020-23. Cleveland was among the league leaders in snaps played with multiple tight ends during his time there, likely a reason for Hooper reuniting with his former coach in Foxboro.
