Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand has had conversations with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on how to handle Rasmus Hojlund’s comeback from injury during the international break.
Hojlund had to wait until the end of December to score his first Premier League goal for United but proceeded to go on a remarkable run after breaking his duck.
Following the Villa win, the Dane scored in every game he appeared until injury struck in February, making it seven goals in six league appearances to take his tally for the season in all competitions to 13.
He made his return on Sunday in the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool, playing 71 minutes before being replaced by Antony.
Hojlund will have the chance to step up his return to fitness with Denmark in international friendly action against Switzerland (23 March) and Faroe Islands (26 March).
Denmark are cautious about risking players with significant upcoming games for their clubs and their own European Championship campaign starting in three months.
‘The big goal is to have as many players as possible in top form at the end of May, when I have to select them for the Euros,’ Hjulmand said, Tipsbladet report.
‘If someone has a little bit of a hamstring, or has to go home to their clubs and play a lot of matches, we take that into account.’
On Hojlund, the Denmark boss continued: ‘We have an agreement with United about the total amount of playing time in the two matches.
‘He plays from the start against Switzerland and there are no restrictions on how much he can play in that match. Then we’ll see what happens after that match.
‘Our staff has put together a plan with Erik ten Hag on how he will get the best build-up after Rasmus’ injury period. It is both for our good and their good.
‘It does not make sense to push a player too hard and increase the risk of an injury that disrupts our own Euro plans. That plan is there for Rasmus Hojlund and for all other players.’
United are back in action away to Brentford and Chelsea following the international break before hosting Liverpool again in the league on 7 April.
