There will be a big problem just outside of London this morning, after the entire eastbound part of the M26 was shut down following a van crash.
This morning, the vehicle went off the road, and emergency services came to the scene around 1am.
As the investigation continues, the road has been shut down between the M25 junction 5, for the A21 near Sevenoaks, and the M26 junction 2A, near Wrotham Heath – essentially the entire length of the short motorway.
National Highways has implemented a different path to avoid the motorway entirely on the road leading from London to Kent.
Its website states: ‘There is currently no estimate available for when the carriageway will re-open, but because investigations are still happening and recovery and clearing are needed after completion, it is expected that this morning’s peak period will be affected.’
The recommended detour, which is not symbol-led, follows this route:
- At J5 of the M25 continue on the anti-clockwise for about seven miles to J3.
- Exit the M25 anti-clockwise at J3 and at the roundabout take the fourth exit onto the M20 eastbound, towards Dover.
- Stay on the M20 eastbound for about six miles to J2.
- Exit at J2 and use the A20 to reach M26 J2A, near Wrotham Heath, or continue eastbound to reach M20 J3, where the M26 meets the M20.
National Highways said: ‘Road users are asked to plan ahead and consider allowing extra journey time if travelling in the area this morning.’
