Tisana Choonhavan, an MP for Bangkok from Move Forward party, has asked the army to look into the suspected suicide of a conscript, who had previously worked as her assistant, to reveal the autopsy results, and to end conscription.
In a recent social media post, the MP mentioned receiving a message from a close friend of her former assistant, informing her that he had hung himself in the bathroom of an army barracks.
She stated that she had received messages from the former assistant, expressing distress about having to do household chores for his commander, like sweeping the floors, mowing the lawns, and dealing with disturbances from fellow conscripts smoking marijuana at night, which made it difficult for him to sleep.
She urged the barracks commander to take responsibility for the untimely death of the conscript and asked the public to support the elimination of mandatory conscription.
Following her post, the hashtag “end mandatory conscription” gained widespread popularity.
Recently, a naval conscript took to social media to talk about being instructed to do household tasks for a naval officer, such as laundering the boss’s clothing as well as that of the entire family.
This post also gained significant attention, prompting Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang to urge the anonymous conscript to step forward and provide full details about the alleged mistreatment of conscripts in the military.
