Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was forced to make a late tactical change before his team's 4-3 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Dutchman secured arguably the most significant win of his United career so far with an exciting victory over the club’s top rivals at the Theatre of Dreams.
United scored late in regulation time to extend the game to extra-time, and scored two more goals in the final 15 minutes of added time to advance to the quarter-finals.
Liverpool had a substantial amount of control throughout the game, especially after half-time.
But United started quickly, with Erik ten Hag making several changes after the 2-0 win against Everton eight days earlier.
One of those changes was bringing Aaron Wan-Bissaka back into the lineup after two months out.
The defender was brought back into the team and was unexpectedly chosen to play at left-back, while Diogo Dalot – who is versatile on either side – played at right-back.
The Daily Mail reports that Wan-Bissaka's inclusion was a last-minute decision and that Victor Lindelof had been planned to start.
However, the Swede had to move to center-back following Jonny Evans's injury, which created an opening at left-back.
While Dalot would have been expected to play there, he had spent the week preparing to face Luis Diaz, and Ten Hag felt he should play up against him.
In addition, Ten Hag wanted Wan-Bissaka's one-on-one defending against Mohamed Salah on the left.
The tactics proved effective, with Wan-Bissaka performing outstandingly before being substituted after 70 minutes.
Dalot completed the 120 minutes, comprising a four-man defense at the end with Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, and Antony.
