Emmet Bergin, who acted in the 1980s RTE series Glenroe, has passed away, it has been reported.
Emmet was well-known for playing Dick Moran in the series, and was one of just four actors to stay as a series regular from its first season in 1983 until its last episode in 2001.
The actor, born in Dublin, reportedly passed away suddenly on March 15, and is survived by his beloved wife and two children.
Emmet’s sibling, EastEnders actor and movie legend Patrick Bergin, announced the unfortunate news of his passing on Facebook.
‘Sharing the sad news of our brother Emmet who was an inspiration and a great man. Love you Emmet. RIP,’ he wrote, alongside a picture of the actor.
Fans and friends quickly offered their support and condolences in the comments of the post, sending well wishes to Emmet’s family.
Alongside his lengthy time on Glenroe, Emmet also portrayed Aengus Fanning in the biographical movie Veronica Guerin.
He was also involved in theater during the 1970s and 1980s, and returned to the stage in 2006 to portray the character of Saul in True West.
Brother Patrick portrayed the character of gangster Aidan Maguire in EastEnders from 2017 to 2018.
He also acted alongside Julia Roberts in the 1991 film Sleeping With The Enemy.
In a statement to RTE, Emmet’s daughter Tara said: ‘Sadly, dad died on Friday morning at home. It was unexpected. He had only recently been made aware of a possible heart issue and had been released from a brief stay in the hospital.
‘We thought and hoped he would be okay. We were all at home when it happened – my mom Sarah, my brother Gavan, and me. He was such an important part of our lives. He will be greatly missed.’
