The Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, will participate in the third Summit for Democracy in South Korea online, as per a reliable source.
The summit's focus is on 'Democracy for Future Generations'. The plenary session of the summit will be held virtually on Wednesday evening. The Thai prime minister, along with leaders from other democratic countries, will deliver a three-minute speech at the plenary session.
The three-day summit began with a ministerial conference and a roundtable discussion on “Technology and Democracy” on Monday.
The second day will center on the role of civil society and youth organizations in shaping the future of democracy.
Srettha's speech will highlight the process of democratization in Thailand. He has led a government that includes various political parties since the election in May last year. Since then, the country's international standing has improved as it is no longer associated with a military-led government.
Thailand was not invited by the US to the previous two summits in 2022 and 2023. At that time, Thailand was seen as a non-democratic country by Washington, one of the US allies in the Indo-Pacific, due to the military's power seizure in 2014.
Thailand held a general election in 2019, but some Western countries were hesitant to recognize the country as a democracy.
