Kai Havertz should have been given a red card in Arsenal’s last Premier League game, a 2-1 victory over Brentford, 21 minutes before his late goal against the Bees.
Declan Rice scored a goal for Arsenal to make it 1-0 at the Emirates on March 9 and after Yoane Wissa equalized, Havertz scored the winning goal in the 87th minute.
This goal took Arsenal to the top of the Premier League and secured what could be a crucial three points in the title race.
However, it has now been revealed that Havertz should not have been allowed to continue playing and score the winning goal.
Two years ago, an independent Key Match Incidents panel (KMI panel) was established by the Premier League to review major decisions made by referees.
The KMI panel has determined that Havertz should have received a second yellow card for 'clearly simulating a foul' in the 66th minute.
After all five panel members reached a unanimous decision, they stated: 'Havertz was already falling when the defender made contact, brushing against Havertz's hip.
The panel unanimously agreed that the referee's decision on the field was incorrect and that Havertz should have been given a second caution for 'clearly simulating a foul'.
The VAR official could not intervene during the game as they are not allowed to review yellow card offenses.
'I don't think Havertz should have been on the field when he scored the goal,' commented Brentford manager Thomas Frank after the game.
