The financier from China and his three partners in Thailand have each been given a 50-year prison sentence by the Criminal Court for involvement in a transnational criminal organization and running a surrogacy business in Thailand.
Seven other partners, mostly Thai women, including Su Ying Tin, the wife of the Chinese financier, have been given a four-year prison sentence each. They have been released as they were already in custody for over four years during the investigation and trial.
As per the prosecutors, the group ran a surrogacy service in Thailand from 2015 to 2020 and persuaded Thai women to work as surrogates for Chinese couples.
Originally, the financier named Ran Zhao and his three Thai partners, Thamnoon, Nopporn, and Nikhom, were given a 150-year prison sentence each for 55 offenses. However, due to their confession, the sentence was reduced to 75 years each. Since Thai law limits prison terms to 50 years, their sentences were further reduced.
