Elon Musk, a wealthy figure in the technology industry, seemed to defend former President Trump on Sunday regarding the news coverage of Trump’s “bloodbath” remarks. Musk said that people should use X instead of relying on the traditional media to avoid being misled.
Musk implied that the “legacy media” misrepresented Trump’s comments from Saturday during the reporting of the former president’s rally. At the heated rally in Ohio on Saturday night, Trump warned about potential consequences if he loses the November election while discussing his proposal for high tariffs on vehicle imports. “bloodbath”
“We’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those guys if I get elected…. Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country,” Trump said.
Musk quickly shared a series of posts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, in response to the coverage. He recommended people use X to share news instead of reading news from the outlets. He replied to a user’s post accusing the media of “lying” about Trump’s recent comments with “Legacy media lies.”
He also stated in a separate post that it is “[e]asy to tell who is an NPC today” next to a meme depicting gray cartoon characters with a speech bubble saying “bloodbath.” NPC stands for “nonplayable character” — a term referring to video game characters that users cannot control and that often have scripted lines, according to The New York Times. The Times observed that the meme format gained popularity among right-wing commentators who used it to insinuate that liberals cannot think for themselves. Musk also urged users to share posts from X with their friends.
He filmed a video directing users on how “to share a post with people outside this platform.” The Biden campaign promptly condemned Trump’s remarks from Saturday as “threats of political violence.”“He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,” campaign spokesperson James Singer stated in a release.
