Gareth Southgate will not think about Mason Greenwood for his England team going to Euro 2024 but has not ruled out a comeback after this summer’s tournament.
Greenwood moved from Manchester United to join Getafe on a season-long loan after his original club decided not to bring him back to the first-team squad.
The 22-year-old has not played for United since he was arrested in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February.
His loan to Getafe has been successful, scoring eight goals and giving five assists in 26 games.
Greenwood played for England once in 2020 but is not expected to return in the coming months as Southgate is worried he would cause a distraction.
‘For me, I don’t think it’s something for before the Euros,’ the England boss said.
‘I think letting him restart his career abroad seems to have been a good decision but I have not followed it closely.
‘I think right now it would be a big distraction for the team and let’s see what happens next season.’
Greenwood played for England once in September 2020, coming off the bench in a 1-0 win over Iceland.
In the following days, he and Manchester City star Phil Foden were removed from the squad for breaking Covid quarantine rules after leaving the team hotel without permission.
The striker is also able to play for Jamacia, whose head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson recently said he would ‘love to have him in my team.’
‘I would like to have the best players in our team, but it’s always up to the player himself if he wants to do it,’ he said.
While United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently kept the possibility open for him to come back to Old Trafford, the club has reportedly valued him at £40million with club officials meeting with counterparts from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid last week.
