An eight-year-old boy has died after consuming strawberries at a school fundraiser.
The boy was discovered unconscious at his residence on Friday, with his parents informing the authorities that he had eaten multiple strawberries from a fundraising event held the previous evening at Madisonville North Hopkins High School in Kentucky.
They stated that they administered benadryl to him when he started displaying symptoms and then bathed him.
However, his symptoms worsened, and he was taken to the hospital around 10.30pm that night before eventually being brought back home hours later.
When his parents tried to wake him for school on Friday morning, he was found unresponsive.
The Hopkins County Health Department confirmed a preliminary autopsy report determined it to be an ‘isolated allergic reaction’, according to FOX News.
Denise Beach, the Director for the Hopkins County Health Department, stated: ‘Dr. Christopher Kiefer, Medical Examiner, indicated that the incident involving strawberries appears to be an isolated allergic reaction.
‘He mentioned that this is a preliminary report, so we still recommend refraining from consuming the strawberries.’
The department has cautioned against consuming the strawberries from the High School.
