West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) said in a recent interview that he still intends to retire, despite Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urging him to reconsider his decision not to run for reelection.
Manchin thinks it's highly unlikely that he would change his decision. told Manchin shared with CNN’s Manu Raju that he does not expect that to happen.
“I don’t expect to run.”
In early November, Manchin announced his retirement from the Senate and last month ruled out the possibility of running for president as a third-party candidate.
Since then, Manchin hasn’t been in the news much, in contrast to the first two years of the Biden administration when he played a crucial role in securing Democratic agenda in the evenly split Senate.
If Manchin doesn't run, it is anticipated that Republicans will easily win his seat in West Virginia.
Former President Trump won the state with 68.6 percent of the vote in 2020 and 67.9 percent in 2016.
Manchin mentioned last year that he planned to complete his term while traveling and speaking out, aiming to gauge interest in forming a movement to unite the middle and bring Americans together.
His comments led to speculation about a potential presidential run backed by the No Labels group.
He ultimately decided against running for president, stating instead that he will focus on ensuring the next president is capable of uniting the country.
