Gareth Southgate has hinted that he might still be willing to choose Aaron Ramsdale for England’s Euro 2024 for the squad even though he hasn't played much for Arsenal.
Ramsdale has had very limited playing time since David Raya arrived on loan from Brentford.
He recently made a big mistake in a game by taking too long with the ball and letting the opponent score. Ramsdale's playing time has been scarce since Raya joined the team.
Southgate had previously said it would be hard to select Ramsdale for the national team if he spent a lot of time as Raya's substitute. Ramsdale decided to stay with Arsenal in January and has been named in England’s squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. His chances of getting back into the first team before the summer tournament seem unlikely, especially after Raya's strong performance in the Champions League.
Southgate suggested that he might reconsider his previous comments about Ramsdale's lack of playing time and take a risk by choosing him for the 23-man squad for Germany.
Ramsdale has been selected for the England squad for the upcoming friendlies.
Southgate says they have chosen the three best goalkeepers for the squad.
Southgate believes Ramsdale can work his way back into the Arsenal team and that they are willing to take a chance by including him in the squad.
He has only played two Premier League games since November.
‘We still believe he can force his way back into the team there [at Arsenal]. That will be more difficult after the penalty shoot-out the other day I would imagine. But he’s just got to keep pushing every day and training well every day.
‘I think if we’ve got three goalkeepers and one isn’t regular, it’s not perfect, but at this moment in time we are prepared to take that chance.’
