Thailand’s Department of Business Development (DBD) has recommended that businesses stay alert for a new scheme by online scammers. They are pushing businesses to update their business details through an online platform or else they could face legal consequences.
DBD Director-General Oramon Sapthaveetham stated today that the department has gotten complaints from businesses that have been contacted by phone, supposedly by DBD officials, or have received fake notification letters from the DBD. They have been pushed to update their business details with the fictitious Online Business Registration Division created by the scammers to deceive potential victims.
The scammers argue that the updates are for the security of their business details and to prevent foreigners from starting businesses in Thailand using Thai individuals as their nominees. Oramon mentioned that numerous businesses have already been tricked by the scammers into clicking on the links they provide, resulting in money being taken from their bank accounts.
She affirms that the DBD does not have a policy to reach out to businesses through online platforms and that the Online Business Registration Division, as claimed by the scammers, does not exist.
