E3 E3 is probably no longer happening but Geoff Keighley is organizing another Summer Game Fest unveiling event and early looks at games in L.A.
Once this year’s event was called off, and the organizers went their separate ways, E3 was officially declared to be over. There’s still a possibility it could come back in the future, especially if someone else buys the name, but for now, it’s done.
Despite that, it still greatly impacts the yearly schedule for games, with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo still holding their own preview events in June, as well as other publishers like Ubisoft.
However, most have started to depend on Summer Game Fest, which occurs around the same time and is hosted by The Game Awards organizer Geoff Keighley. And this year it’s aiming to capitalize on E3’s absence and establish itself as the the top summer games event.
When is Summer Game Fest 2024?
This Summer Game Fest broadcast will happen on Friday, June 7 at 10pm GMT, which is much more convenient than the usual 1am starting time of The Game Awards.
It usually lasts around two though, so you’d still have to be quite dedicated to watch it all live, but at least it’s somewhat more achievable.
If you haven’t watched one before then it’s essentially The Game Awards but without the awards, with numerous new trailers, including some for previously announced games, and developers appearing on stage to promote their game.
There is also a live event happening simultaneously, which will now last three days instead of just two. It’s only open to press and streamers, similar to how E3 operated for the majority of its existence, but last year there were only a few games present.
Hopefully there’ll be more this year though and then we’ll have something that is at least roughly similar to what E3 used to be.
As for the other publisher events, there’s no information yet on any dates but last year Sony had theirs in late May and Microsoft did very well with their Xbox Summer Preview in June.
There’s usually a Nintendo Direct in June too but that might not necessarily be the case this year, as it’s very unclear what games will be releasing in the second half of the year or when Nintendo will start talking about Switch 2.
That could well happen in June but given the uncertainty as to when the new console will be released, it’s best not to assume anything.
