Sophia Topakas, who also plays soccer for the Vikings, has been a valuable addition to Archbishop Wood’s lineup this season, offering a different approach to the game.
As a sophomore guard and soccer midfielder, Topakas brings a unique skill set to the team, contributing to their drive for a state title.
Topakas played well as Archbishop Wood's team defeated Dallas with a score of 66-32, showcasing her all-around skills.
Topakas initially expected to be a bench player but has become more comfortable in her starting role as the season progressed, adapting to her teammates' playing style.
During the game against Dallas, Topakas scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and made three assists, making a significant contribution to the team's performance.
In soccer, Topakas plays as a holding midfielder, a position that requires versatility and often goes unnoticed, but has successfully translated these skills to the basketball court.
Wood coach Mike McDonald described Topakas' basketball style as similar to that of a soccer player, highlighting her ability to facilitate, handle the ball, and shoot effectively.
While Topakas is capable of making outside shots, her strength lies in driving towards the basket, a skill likely influenced by her soccer footwork and ability to maneuver past defenders.
McDonald also emphasized Topakas' defensive versatility, as she is able to defend both bigger players and cover the perimeter effectively.
Topakas attributes her success to her cutting and sprinting abilities, which have always been integral aspects of her game.
Topakas is part of the Mid-Atlantic Magic travel basketball team and has seen her role grow from JV player to a more significant position in the varsity team.
Topakas' role expanded further due to a teammate's knee injury, and she seamlessly integrated into the starting lineup alongside four team captains.
Coach McDonald praised Topakas' instincts, describing her as a crafty and energetic player who reacts well to the game and contributes positively to the team.
Topakas attributes her improvement this season to spending extra time in the gym. Despite juggling a fall sport with Wood’s open gyms, the guard always made an effort to put in the extra work.
Currently, she is content with playing a more supportive role. However, if one of her teammates is struggling or someone gets into foul trouble, Topakas is confident that she can step up.
“When I have the ball in my hand, I feel more assured rather than rushed or frantic,” Topakas stated. “I made it a point to practice shooting every day, even if it was just for 20 minutes. I believe that consistently handling the ball each day really makes a difference.”
A NEW PERSPECTIVE >> Wood never fell behind on Wednesday, taking the lead 8-0 before Dallas even scored a point, so there was ample time for the team’s bench players.
The Vikings’ freshmen, especially Sophia McDonald, Regan Przepioski, and Makayla Finnegan, contributed valuable minutes. Sophia McDonald, Mike McDonald’s niece, tied for the team lead with 12 points, while Finnegan and Przepioski each scored a basket and contributed on both offense and defense.
Finnegan has been the team’s top substitute all season, while Sophia McDonald is usually the first off the bench. Mike McDonald expressed his satisfaction in giving Przepioski extended playing time on Wednesday, as the forward’s role typically depends on matchups.
“That’s the most challenging role to take on, and Regan really excelled at it,” McDonald commented. “She truly understands the defensive support positions.
“They’re all gaining this experience, and they’ll improve with each round, so hopefully it will benefit them when they return next year.”
Out of Wood’s 17 offensive rebounds, Greer grabbed seven of them. She and Emily Knouse tied with Sophia McDonald for the team lead with 12 points. Wood also recorded 17 assists in the victory.
The Vikings’ upcoming matchup is against District 2 champions Scranton on Saturday.
